How to Find Indiana Jail Mugshots

Indiana has several ways to search for jail mugshots and booking records. Each of the state's 92 counties runs its own jail and Sheriff's Office. Some counties share a statewide database. Others have their own online portals. A handful have no web search at all and ask callers to contact the jail directly. Knowing which system your county uses will save you time and frustration.

The fastest free option is the Indiana County Jail Public Portal, commonly called INjail. This free site covers more than two dozen counties and lets you search by last name, first name, birth date, or county. It is open to anyone, no account needed. If the county you need is not listed there, go to that county sheriff's website or call the jail. Some Indiana counties use third-party jail management software, including JailTracker, Police to Citizen, and NewWorld, which all have their own public-facing search pages with current booking information.

The Indiana VINE system is another solid option. VINE stands for Victim Information and Notification Everyday. Call 1-866-959-VINE (8463) or visit vinelink.com to look up custody status for most Indiana county jails. VINE does not always include photos, but it gives you custody status, bond info, and charges. The service is free and available around the clock.

Note: Not every county posts mugshots online. Some jails release photos only to the person named in the record or to authorized parties upon request.

Indiana County Jail Public Portal

The Indiana County Jail Public Portal at public.indianajail.gov is the primary statewide database for finding jail mugshots and inmate records. It covers counties including Brown, Carroll, Elkhart, Fountain, Grant, Hendricks, Howard, Huntington, Jasper, Jay, Johnson, LaGrange, Lawrence, Marshall, Miami, Monroe, Morgan, Newton, Noble, Starke, Steuben, Wabash, Wells, and others. The list of participating counties grows as new jails connect to the system, so check the portal even if your county has not been listed before.

The portal at public.indianajail.gov provides a statewide gateway for searching Indiana jail mugshots without knowing which specific county to contact first. Select a county from the dropdown menu or leave it blank to search all participants at once. Enter the last name and first name of the person you are looking for. A date of birth helps narrow results when the name is common. The system shows current inmates with their booking details. Not every participating county displays photos, but all show name, date of birth, charges, and booking date.

When a name does not appear in the portal results, it means one of three things: the person was released, the county is not a portal participant, or the person is held in a state facility rather than a county jail. In those cases, try the VINE system or search that county's own sheriff website directly.

The INjail portal is maintained by the state and updated regularly as inmates are booked and released from participating Indiana county jails.

Marion County Jail Mugshots and Inmate Search

Marion County is Indiana's most populous county and runs its own dedicated inmate search system. It does not use the statewide INjail portal. The Marion County Inmate Lookup Tool is at inmateinfo.indy.gov/IML. You can search by name, booking number, permanent number, state ID, county ID, FBI number, or ICE number. An option to include already-released inmates helps when you are searching historical records.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office is at 695 Justice Way, Indianapolis, IN 46203. The main phone is 317-327-1700. Email is Contact.MCSO@indy.gov. Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The online tool runs 24 hours a day, which makes it easy to check on someone at any time. Marion County processes a high volume of bookings given the size of Indianapolis, so results update frequently throughout the day.

Indiana VINE and SAVIN Inmate Search Tools

VINE is the main free inmate notification and lookup tool used across Indiana. Call 1-866-959-VINE (8463) or visit vinelink.com to check custody status for anyone held in an Indiana county jail or state facility. You can also register for alerts by phone or email so you are notified when an inmate's status changes. The service runs all day, every day, at no cost.

VINE victim notification system for tracking Indiana jail mugshot and inmate custody status

Indiana SAVIN, the Statewide Automated Victim Information and Notification system, is a state-run complement to the VINE system. Search at indianasavin.in.gov using a last name, offender identification number, or case number. The search requires at least a partial last name to return results. Indiana SAVIN focuses on offenders under state supervision, though it may include some county jail inmates as well. Use it alongside VINE for the most complete search.

Both tools are free and do not require you to set up an account. Neither asks for a reason for your search. VINE covers a broader range of Indiana county jails while SAVIN is more focused on state corrections supervision.

Indiana Courts MyCase for Arrest Records

Indiana Courts MyCase at public.courts.in.gov/mycase is the public court records portal for all Indiana counties. It is not a jail roster. But it is useful when you want to see charges, case status, and court dates tied to a booking or arrest. Anyone may search MyCase for public, non-confidential case information and documents, many of which are available online at no charge.

MyCase supports wildcard and Soundex searching. You can search by name, case number, or party. The site notes that displayed information is not an official court record and may contain errors. For certified copies of court documents, contact the clerk of the court in the relevant Indiana county. The Odyssey Case Management System, which powers MyCase, is used by counties statewide and is given to counties at no cost under Indiana's court technology program.

Indiana Department of Correction Offender Locator

The Indiana Department of Correction Offender Locator covers state prison inmates, not county jail inmates. Find it at offenderlocator.idoc.in.gov. Searches can be done by last name alone or by both first and last name. Searching both names gives more focused results. The locator shows each offender's facility assignment and DOC number so you know where they are housed.

If someone was recently arrested but has not yet been sentenced to a state facility, they will not appear in the IDOC locator. Use the county jail search tools first. The Indiana Department of Correction is located at 302 W. Washington St., Indianapolis, IN 46204. The general phone is (317) 232-5711. For a broader criminal history check, the Indiana State Police offers criminal history services at in.gov/isp/criminal-history-services.

Indiana Jail Mugshots and Public Records Law

Indiana Code 5-14-3-5 requires that arrest information be made available to the public. That includes a person's name, age, and address, as well as the date, time, and location of the arrest, the arresting officer's name, the charges filed, and any bail or bond amount. This is why county jails across Indiana post booking data online. The Indiana Public Access Counselor confirmed in a formal opinion that booking photos are generally public records under Indiana law. Read that opinion at in.gov/pac.

There are limits to what you can see. IC 5-14-3-4 lists exceptions to public disclosure. Active investigatory records are protected. If a record has been expunged under IC 35-38-5-5, the agency will restrict access to that criminal history. Expungement does not automatically remove photos from private websites, but it does limit what government agencies will release going forward. The Indiana Public Access Counselor at in.gov/pac handles formal complaints when agencies deny lawful records requests. That office also publishes guides on Indiana's public access laws.

Under IC 10-13-3-27, law enforcement agencies may release limited criminal history data to non-criminal justice organizations and individuals. Sheriff duties under IC 36-2-13-5 include taking photographs and fingerprints of persons taken into custody for felonies or misdemeanors. This statutory duty is why mugshots exist as official public documents in Indiana.
